Entrevista: a maior coleção de figures do Dr. Who no Brasil

A organização tambémfacilita a pesquisa. Segundo o colecionador, esse trabalho几乎 daily, pois a Coleção continua growing with the release of new figures and the appearance de peças raras em feiras, lojas specialized e coleções particulares.

Ainda assim, ficou months on his desk until he decided to buy another.

O interest soon expanded. New companions appeared on the shelves, followed by Cybermen and other enemies. André says the turning point was realizing that each era of the program had its own visual language and that collecting could document those changes. Figures that looked ordinary at first acquired new meaning as the collection grew.

At the same time, the hobby became a family affair. His partner helped photograph and catalog the pieces, while relatives began understanding the criteria behind each acquisition. The shelves that once held only a Dalek eventually became part of the house’s visual identity.

For André, revisiting a piece also revives a period of his life. That personal dimension is one of the reasons the collection has remained stable even when space and budget became limiting factors.

Os Doctors ocupam a mesma linha do tempo

A vitrine principal é dedicada aos Doctors. André attempted to follow the succession presented by the series, from the classic eras to more recent incarnarnations. The shelf works like a visual timeline, showing changes in costume, expression, hairstyle and interpretation across generations of actors.

Each Doctor has multiple versions whenever possible. There are figures with articulated bodies, smaller toys, special editions and interpretations produced by different companies. André says the preference is for pieces that capture recognizable facial expressions, even when their proportions vary between manufacturers.

He also keeps duplicates when they represent meaningful production variations. Two Cybermen with different painting or Daleks with distinct accessories are not considered waste. On the contrary, they help reconstruct the diversity of an industry that has represented the same characters in many different scales and styles.

The arrangement changes occasionally, but there is always a narrative. Recent acquisitions receive a temporary place, while the most important pieces occupy the central level. André calls this process “a curadoria do visível”: the collection preserves far more than it displays, allowing new combinations and new readings of the universe of Doctor Who.

Escultura, tinta e arte industrial

The quality of a Doctor Who figure depends on details that are easy to overlook. A good sculpt needs to reproduce the folds of a coat, the expression of a companion or the texture of a Dalek’s armor. In articulated versions, the joints must support the pose without breaking the visual balance of the character.

André pays close attention to painting. The metallic finish of the Cybermen, the colors of the TARDIS and the gloss of the Daleks’ domes can change completely depending on the production. He therefore studies catalog entries and specialist galleries before deciding which pieces deserve a place in the collection.

Packaging and edition size also influence his choices. Items with their original box tend to occupy a protected area, while figures bought loose are evaluated according to their wear, accessories and the presence of original parts. Bootlegs and unofficial miniatures receive a separate register, allowing André to document both their appeal and their limitations.

That research often takes place on sites and archives specialized in the subject. A galeria de figures colecionáveis can help compare finishes, scales and production details, although André still makes his final judgment in person.

Doctor Who is recognized by images that have become symbols within British popular culture. The TARDIS, the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Weeping Angels are essential to André’s arrangement. Their presence allows the collection to represent both the intimate atmosphere of the stories and the large-scale battles that shaped the series.

The TARDIS occupies a special place. More than a scale model, it works as a visual anchor for the entire collection. Different versions demonstrate how the same blue box has been interpreted by toys, statues and limited editions over the years. Daleks and Cybermen, in turn, provide contrast through their shapes, sounds and mechanical aesthetics.

For the companions, André prioritizes facial accuracy and the faithful reproduction of costumes. Rose, Amy, Clara, River and the most recent companions share space with companions from the classic era. The result is a cross-section of the series in which changes in television aesthetics can be observed through the figures themselves.

He also pays attention to monsters and minor characters that rarely receive the same attention as the main icons. Their inclusion reveals another side of the collection: a detailed record of the production design, wardrobe and graphic language that made Doctor Who so visually distinctive.

O acervo como memória do colecionismo brasileiro

Documentation is one of André’s greatest concerns. The collection has a physical inventory and a digital database containing photographs, acquisition records and restoration notes. The system helps identify the rarest pieces and preserve the history of objects that might otherwise be reduced to simple inventory numbers.

This archive also connects Doctor Who to the broader history of Brazilian collecting. The work editorial da Sala de Justiça documents brands, franchises and the communities that built a culture around action figures, comic books and miniature editions in Brazil. For André, these records demonstrate that each collection carries a local history within the international history of the hobby.

Sharing is part of that mission. André has already received collectors and students interested in the shelves and occasionally opens parts of the collection for exhibitions. These meetings make it possible to explain the difference between an original edition and a later reproduction, discuss the work of sculptors and show how the same character changes from one manufacturer to another.

Preservation also requires planning. The figures need stable temperatures, protection against direct light, careful handling and secure storage. More delicate pieces are kept in cases with controlled humidity, while the database helps recover information if an item is ever moved, repaired or offered for sale. The archive protects not only the physical objects, but also their provenance.

O próximo capítulo da coleção

André’s next objective is to transform part of the private collection into a public digital exhibition. The project will present selected figures by character and production period, accompanied by the stories that connect them to his own collecting journey. The intention is to offer a clear view of the material without exposing every piece simultaneously.

New acquisitions will remain important, but rarity will no longer be the only priority. André plans to give greater attention to sculpting quality, character representation and the historical value of each edition. He also wants to document limited releases that receive little circulation in Brazil and rarely appear in conventional catalogs.

The collection’s greatest challenge is space. As the inventory grows, André intends to rotate the displays and transfer duplicated documentation to a more compact catalog. This will allow the physical collection to remain organized without reducing the depth of the historical record.
